Window handling in win32

I am not familiar with the window handling, and it
seems VC++ 4.0 handles this differently than 5.0.
when i try to create it.

hWindow = CreateWindowEx(WS_EX_APPWINDOW,
"BigRRed", "Big RRed", 0, CW_USEDEFAULT, CW_USEDEFAULT, 640, 480, NULL, NULL, hInstance, NULL);

I get false as answer. It seems something vc 4.0 doesnt like.
